I often speak of central nervous system (CNS) down-regulation as an essential piece of mind fitness for many people in a constant state of hypervigilance. This can include veterans, first responders, frontline workers, or anyone stressed out by life. One simple and effective way to help is through a Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) practice.
NSDR is similar to Yoga Nidra and involves bringing awareness to specific parts of your body in sequence and consciously relaxing them. It serves as a CNS reboot, and I like to utilize it during the middle of the day. Interestingly enough, I developed my own version of this as a teenager to help me fall asleep. I called it “downshifting,” and I may record a guided version in the future.
For now, try Andrew Huberman’s ten-minute NSDR protocol on YouTube.
